Lighting Reel

Reel Breakdown - Lookdev Reel

1. Yeon's Room

This is the largest environment scene I've worked on so far! The models and textures were done in my sophomore year, and I worked on lighting in my junior year. I wanted this room to reflect my childhood memories, since I'm always drawn to nostalgia. I also wanted this room to evoke some of that nostalgia for viewers as well, so I focused on that through textures and tried to show each object's history and personality. I also wanted the lighting to support that feeling, so I created a warm, orange lighting to give the scene a cozy feel. I included some personal details throughout the room, such as my childhood photos, paintings, personal photography, and posters I created!

2. Yeon's Room - Nighttime

I wanted to reimagine the childhood room at nighttime. I aimed for moonlight to stream through the windows, softly illuminating the objects in the room. For subtle contrast, I added a warm indoor light leaking from under the door, along with a lamp. Compared to the daytime scene, I wanted to evoke a calmer mood resembling the feeling of nighttime when the world has fallen asleep.

3. Baseball Locker Room

For this scene,  I took this locker room and reimagined it as one for a baseball team that also really loves music. Since I love both baseball and music, I enjoyed including some personal details, such as my favorite album and the logos of my favorite baseball team. Modeling and texturing were really fun, as I got to work on so many interesting objects, particularly the leather guitar case. I wanted to depict this scene during sunset, with soft sunlight coming from the windows and blending with the interior lights.

4. Auto Repair Shop

This was a fun group project I worked on in my sophomore year with two fellow students. For this project, I was responsible for the garage interior along with the neon signs. It was my first time creating an outdoor scene, and I really enjoyed both modeling and set dressing. For the overall atmosphere, I aimed for purple and yellow tones to contrast each other. I had fun adding scratches and dirt to give the assets an aged, weathered texture, especially the signs. For lighting, I wanted to convey the cool, crisp feeling of a summer night, and the neon light was a fun pop.

5. Hero Prop - Winged Helmet

This was a really fun hero prop project I worked on as part of my sophomore class, led by Christina Faraj. The reference came from a magazine of a K-pop member wearing this helmet. I was drawn to it because it’s not overly cute or feminine, but it still conveys strength. I wanted it to feel sturdy and powerful, rather than purely decorative. I enjoyed modeling the unique shapes of the gears, the wings, and ribbons on the helmet. Coloring and texturing were also enjoyable, and I focused on adding chips, scratches, and subtle grunge to the iron parts. I concentrated on communicating the different materials throughout the helmet, including hard plastic, iron, and the soft foam inside.

6. Fish Taxi

Since I’ve always been interested in the concept of the sea, I decided to make a fish-themed character. I really enjoyed texturing the fish’s skin, focusing on capturing its natural curves and reflective qualities. I also had fun experimenting with different fabrics for the character’s clothing and lighting the character's glowing eyes.

7. Old Haunting Grounds

This was a 15-week group project I worked on with two other teammates in class, led by Harry Dorrington. It was my first attempt at an animated short film, and we handled all aspects from pre-production to post-production, including story development, scriptwriting, character design, and storyboarding. During production, I was responsible for environment modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering. I also assisted the main compositor with compositing and color grading.

This film really pushed me, and I learned a lot about teamwork and the power of collaboration. Building the entire environment was a challenge, but visiting a real cemetery for reference helped me a lot with modeling and texturing. Lighting was particularly challenging because it was a vast outdoor scene, so I focused on the key light, which is the moon, while supporting it with lights such as streetlamps to create a slightly eerie nighttime atmosphere in a cemetery. I also took inspiration from The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline for the overall mood. It was also my first time lighting a moving character, which taught me a lot about character lighting in motion. Watch Full Video

8. Laputian Robot

This was a personal project I worked on during the summer, inspired by one of my favorite films, Castle in the Sky. I was drawn to the shape and textures of the robot, so I thought it would be fun to recreate it! I focused on creating a worn, scrap-metal-like robot body texture using rusty iron materials. I really wanted my 3d version to keep the feeling of the original 2d depiction of the robot.
